This is a second edition publication by Betty Stephenson. The first edition was published in 1990. Betty died in 1993. The second edition book is published by Timothy Parks, a journalist and book store owner in Gainesville, Texas, with permission from Betty's Husband Louis Stephenson. The book portrays the lives of people in and around Camp Howze, a training facility and German prison camp during World War II. Camp Howze was located in Gainesville, Texas. From the book As the threat of war spread throughout the country like a blob of spilled ink, hurried meetings were held to establish the camps needed to train thousands of soldiers. War Department representatives wasted no time in putting plans for the camps into high gear. Ten days after the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, members of the Department were in Gainesville to work on a proposed 58,000 acre site in northwestern Cooke County, which would uproot some 300 farm families. Congressman Ed Gossett notified The Gainesville Daily Register on March 20, 1942, that the camp had been officially authorized. Construction was started on March 23 and the camp activated just five months later, on August 15.
