The Rock and the Kangaroos (2nd) #2
About the book
Big Jim Green and Rock Riley leave Ferguson, Oklahoma in August of 1959 for Baker College in Douglas, Texas, totally confident about the surroundings they are leaving and totally unsure about the setting they are entering.
They find they have as much to give their new environment, as it has to give them. Through creative adventures, the Rock's intellect and wit, and a basketball team that approaches greatness, bonds of friendship and perceptions of life are formed.
A constant conflict between Rock having a precise plan for life and Big Jim not caring about anything beyond the next basketball game, weaves its way through the story. The Rock tries to encourage Big Jim to come up with a plan that will allow him to "give back" his greatest talents as Big Jim resists his efforts with a carefree attitude that mostly involves playing ball and dating rich girls.
Excerpt from the book
The remainder of the afternoon, the glory days at Baker College lay heavy on my heart - they were good times, growing up times, triumphant times, and times tinged with sadness. The day The rock and I left Ferguson in August 1959 for our freshman year at Baker College came to my mind as if it had happened yesterday. As far as I am concerned, all those days at Baker happened yesterday, because they are part of me like the marrow in my bone. Who I am today, started the moment we left Ferguson...
The best District 9 basketball game ever played was tied 70 to 70 with 10 seconds left on the clock. Kirby called time out to prepare for the final shot of the game. When they brought the ball in, they quickly set a screen for their best shooter and he took a 23-foot jumper with six seconds on the clock. As soon as he turned the ball loose, I sprinted toward our basket, and as I looked back, I saw Suitcase come down with the rebound, flip it to Rock on the outlet, and the Rock hit me with a perfect strike as I went in the air and slam dunked the Kangaroos to Kansas City.
