His tall frame was straight, and the look of the elderly had not yet overtaken him. He looked in the vicinity of Lilah's face, unblinking. Cass sat on the end of the bed, propped by one tanned arm, staring as intently as her aunt and uncle. As Lilah considered her youngest (and truth be told, favorite) granddaughter, she realized how striking the girl was. But Cass didn't flaunt her beauty, and it was easy to forget how exceptional her looks were. Knowing why everyone was here in her bedroom touched Lilah, and as sadness for them formed in her eyes, fear for herself rose in her chest, just as it had when she was the one who was doing the losing. But she did not want to go out remembering the pain, and so she concentrated hard, and soon she was dreaming.
